why are slot machines taxed and table games not

Playing slot machines is the most popular form of casino gambling in the world, and knowing how to win at the slots can be one of the most important things a gambler ever learns. Although today's slot machines have little in common with the original Liberty Bell made by Charles Fey intheir shape, size and popularity certainly do. Slot machines were first introduced as amusement devices for bars and cigar stores. The machines featured three spinning reels with ten symbols on each. The probability of winning on the old age is easy to compute. They offered combinations and paid out total prizes, so the house won units for every spins on average, of course.

Maybe I should try table games I agree. But I have found I like the "hybrid" roulette tables. I like the normal tables, but it can get annoying when you have 3 people standing behind you, yames over, grabbing chips early, etc. But I like the table games I assume die hards don't rate Like sic bo at nyny and wheel of fortune at Excalibur.

Many a hilarious hour spent on them. Money seems to last forever on them. Don't know why but I never get offered comp'd Rooms etc :. To me, Vegas or casinos everywhere for that matter are about table games. I don't play Roulette but it's a massive part of the Vegas experience and everyone seems to love it.

Craps too. I play Blackjack and Poker and am very much looking forward to playing both next month when I'm there.

But to me these games are a big financial commitment I write-off my betting stash as money I will lose and any I come back nkt is a bonus and if I'm in Vegas for six days then I don't have the bankroll to be playing on the tables for a lot of that time. That's where the slots come in.

I can pass a couple of hours on a machine, grab a couple of drinks from a CW and hopefully a couple more after thatchill out with my friends, people watch and play a slot machine at my own pace.

I didn't play Video Poker much last time I was there because I didn't realise drinks were comped while you were playing it.

Now I know that I'll be hitting the VP bars nlt over New Year I suspect and was even practising playing that online last night so that I can try to get my loss-rate as low as possible. I don't consider these games as 'gambling' they're just a way of losing money but hopefully at a lower rate than the cost of a drink. I agree Breeze. I love blackjack and still find myself a "student" taxsd the game macuines years after making my first bet at the Horseshoe.

The social aspect combined with skill involved and a low house edge make it my favorite game. But I understand how comps work and would rather spend my money on a game that gives me a fighting chance to win long-term.

Besides, table players never die of thirst! Drink service is far better at the tables. I will only play Poker slots. At least, you have to think a little.

For example, if you are playing Jacks or better and draw a pair of Aces and four diamonds. Do you keep the sure winner or discard an Ace and go for the flush?

Lots of hands make you think a little, Better than just pushing a button. That is too boring. I do play some Black Jack. It's more of a risk for enjoyment.

Depends upon the attitude of the other players. I don't machknes to Vegas to be annoyed. Tony, you can probably answer this - as I said I was playing VP online last night to practice and was playing Jacks or Better.

Quite often I'd get a low pair with a high card. I was reading online that I should only keep the low pair and discard the other three cards. Is that what you'd do or would you keep the high card with it?

I like to mix it up and ehy both, but I understand how people can be intimidated by table games, not wanting to do the wrong thing and get yelled at Look at the people who come on here and post that they're thinking ard sitting down at a table, but want to know the etiquette because they're nervous My system for managing gambling money is simple.

I ration the money throughout the day and stop when I lose my hundred and do other things. I might stop when I double my allotment. In any event at the end of the day, I either am ahead or behind. I am happy if I break even In recent years I have done better.

I will tell you how later. The bad news: There are no casino games or bets where the house does not have a clear advantage. The odds either favor the house And if you are not familiar with basic information about the games you play or bets you make, you are just about a guaranteed loser.

In short, casino owners are in business to make a profit. They did not build all those gorgeous hotels by giving away money.

Understanding Slot Machines Then and Now

The good news: The reality is that if you are lucky you can win But statistically the chances are against winning. So the cardinal rule is, over the long haul, whether playing the slots, table games, betting on sports or risking money on anything; you will probably lose.

But some bets are better than others. We will, however, cover the most popular games and things you should know as a beginner to have fun and minimize your loss Blackjack 21 is either dealt by hand with one or two decks. Roulette consists of a spinning wheel marked with numbers 1 through 36 18 red, 18 black and American Roulette has a green 0 and You win if your number, combination of numbers or color comes up.

To play Keno, you select a minimum of 4 but no more than 10 numbers on a ticket between 1 and Twenty of the 80 numbered balls are drawn and you win if all your selected numbers are chosen. Craps is a complicated dice game which we do not recommend for first-timers. There are many other table games and variations as well. More and more people are playing poker these days and we will also have a little to say about that later.

That's why manufacturers like Konami come up with multi-linked games with bonus screens. And, they know that players need enough tiny payouts to get instant gratification, and enough higher payoffs to keep them interested.

For example, a popular slot machine might have 12 possible payouts ranging from 1 to 1, up to 2, to 1. That payout might only occur everyspins. By contrast, the 1 to 1 payout comes every eight plays. That keeps you interested, but not excited. Other small payouts might range from once every 20 plays to once every plays. However, a nice 80 to 1 payout may be set to payoff more often.

It may hit every plays on average, of course.

That's often enough to be very exciting, but just small enough to keep the player from walking away and trying another machine. Because of this, some players take advantage of the frequency of gajes payoffs and move to a new machine after hitting one.

Why such a difference if the two games have the same house edge? By comparison, nickel slots (considered to have a lousy house edge) kept only % statewide! Why would slot machines (with a high house edge) keep less money than table games (with a low house edge)? It does not apply to winnings from bingo, keno, and slot machines. This works for them machinse the medium jackpots hit regularly enough to enjoy, and when they do get an or similar payoff, they know it won't hit again for a while and move on to another machine. Overall, you will still have the same chance of hitting the top jackpot, as long as you are playing the maximum number of coins - regardless of how often you move about.

This percentage is similar to video poker machines, although perfect play of some video poker machines can actually give the player a small edge over the casino, especially when player's club comps are added in. Moe is an award-winning author and historian of Nevada casinos.

    1. Although I will fiddle around with Lobstermania and those bandit 6X poker machines that WW's DH just hit for a hand pay and Video Poker, which I don't consider a slot, I can't imagine going to Las Vegas and playing nothing but slot machines. I would punch myself in the face out of sheer boredom. Now, there has been a recent spate of threads and comments about the poor behavior at the tables.
